About

What is Cupertino Hoops?

Cupertino Hoops is an all-volunteer, basketball league with the primary goal of creating a positive culture for youth basketball and where kids learn to love to play the game. The league is a long-time member of the Stanford Positive Coaching Alliance whose founder, Jim Thompson, is also one of the founders of Cupertino Hoops. Cupertino Hoops had its first season in 1989-90.

What are the Goals of Cupertino Hoops?

Cupertino Hoops has set the following goals:

  • Respect the Game
  • Redefine Winning
  • Use Positive Motivation

How are these goals met?

By developing positive coaches

All Cupertino Hoops coaches must be certified as “Positive Coaches”. This requires participation in a training session conducted by the Stanford Positive Coaching Alliance. The goals of a positive coach are to always:

  • Put players first
  • Develop character and skills
  • Foster internal motivation
  • Refuse to use fear, intimidation or shame
  • Create a partnership with players
  • Honor the game
  • Balance playing time as evenly as possible

By ensuring quality officiating

Quality, paid officiating is vital to player development. Players learn more when officials are knowledgeable and make consistent decisions.

By requiring that parents “Honor the Game” both in words and actions

Parents must sign and agree to the following:

  • I understand that the top three reasons kids play sports are to have fun, make new friends, and learn new skills. I understand that the game is for the kids and that I pledge to focus my energy on my child having fun and in keeping basketball in its proper perspective.
  • I pledge to “Honor the Game.” I understand the importance of being a good example of sportsmanship to my children and all associated with the game. No matter what others may do, I will show respect for all involved in the game including coaches, players, opponents, opposing fans and officials. I understand that officials, coaches, and players make mistakes. If the official makes a “bad” call against my team, I will Honor the Game and be silent!
  • I agree to honor the Cupertino Hoops Parent Pledge in my words and actions.
